Manafort Brothers, Inc. was selected to perform the demolition of a structurally compromised 150-foot-tall smokestack at the Berkshire Mill in Adams, Massachusetts.
Prior to demolition activities, Manafort secured the surrounding parking area to safely isolate the work zone from pedestrian and vehicular traffic. A comprehensive traffic control plan was developed and implemented to maintain daily circulation impacted by the closure.

Demolition operations were executed using a 185-foot boom lift, allowing crews to safely access the upper elevation of the structure and conduct controlled hand demolition. Utilizing electric and pneumatic chipping hammers, Manafort’s skilled team removed brick material inward into the smokestack shaft to mitigate risk and maintain structural stability throughout the process. Hand demolition continued until the structure reached an approximate height of 35 feet.
The remaining lower section was then efficiently removed through mechanical demolition using an excavator, expediting the schedule and streamlining debris handling. All demolished materials were loaded into triaxle trucks and transported to a local recycling facility for proper disposal.
Through detailed planning, experienced personnel, and specialized equipment, Manafort successfully completed the Berkshire Mill smokestack demolition ahead of schedule, within budget, and with zero safety incidents.
