Manafort Brothers, Inc. performed the challenging decommissioning, remediation, abatement, dismantlement and disposal of two historic mercury boilers at the Schiller Power Station in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

The scope of work included the abatement and remediation of asbestos, lead, PCB and mercury contaminants. The boiler structures were over five stories tall and were located within an active coal/gas/wood fired four unit power plant. Over 3,000 tons of materials were processed and packaged in the building and removed by hand with most of the work being completed in negative air containments. The project also involved the demolition of one of the exterior stacks and restoration of the areas of the plant that were affected as a result of the removal of the boilers. This work included the furnishing and installation of concrete slab infills, steel framed and grated walkways, handrails and other life safety systems. Manafort was responsible for the packaging and loading of all waste and demolition debris materials and for the coordination of all shipping and disposal.

Manafort, as the Prime Contractor for this unique, specialized, and challenging project, led and coordinated the project team, including our own crews plus numerous subcontractors performing waste disposal, hygienist services and other specialized tasks to a successful completion.
